How to Protect Your Outdoor Furniture From Winter
Winter can be a very tough time of year not just for you, your pets and your plants, but also you outdoor furniture. If you have a patio furniture set that you want to keep around as long as possible, you need to understand how the wicked weather of winter can impact your furniture pieces and what you can do to protect them and prevent damage.
The first thing you need to do is get to know your furniture and what kind of damage it maybe facing. If you have wood furniture, the winter weather can cause drying, cracking and warping of the wood. If you have metal there could be a rust threat. Plastic and other materials have a threat of becoming brittle. And if your furniture pieces are cushioned, there is a whole new host of possible problems they are facing.
So what can you do? Learn your options for preventing the damage from happening in the first place.
Covers
The first option you have is to look into furniture covers that will keep your furniture protected from the elements. You can usually find these at any store that sells outdoor furniture. These covers usually just slip over the top of the furniture pieces and then have a way to tighten them in place. These will keep the wind from blowing dirt on your furniture and will also prevent snow and other precipitation from getting in to do any damage.
Garage or Shed
Do you have a garage? How about a lawn shed? Either of these are good places to put your patio furniture to help it make it through the winter. You know you are not going to be going outside once the temperature gets to a certain point for winter. At this point, its time to not only move yourself inside, but also that patio furniture.
By moving the patio furniture inside you will be able to accomplish a few things. First you will keep the furniture from sitting directly in the elements. The constant hounding from snow, wind and other winter weather can make your new furniture look old quickly. If you do not have a garage or other storage area at your home that may be a good place to put your patio furniture, you may want to take a look into getting a storage unit. This is especially a good idea if you have a large or expensive outdoor furniture set. While you may think that putting the money out for something like this is a waste of money, you should consider what you are risking. Think of how much that furniture set cost when you purchased it. If you leave it out through too many harsh winters that is how much you will have to pay to replace the set, or more. It is often much more affordable to take the time to put it away than to have to buy new pieces.
